Change of Use, Listed Building
In creating an inviting street presence for a new coffee shop and bakery, this project has a head start: it is located in the imposing former NatWest Bank on Market Square in St Ives. The original building for London County and Westminster Bank was designed by Cheston and Perkins in 1910-12 in a Queen Anne-Neo Georgian style. The attractive three storey, 4-bay front bank in English bond red brick is Grade II listed. However, working with heritage buildings provides unique challenges with planning and alteration restrictions on listed buildings. Graham Handley Architects has extensive experience of working with listed buildings to adapt them to new uses, working with the heritage features to create functional, efficient and beautiful spaces, which enhance the qualities of the historic building whilst adding a clean and contemporary feel.
